EAD 860: Concept of Learning Society

Dr. Steven Weiland

This course dives into the phrase “Learning Society” and how the educational experiences develop over time throughout a life span. Students will spend much of their time learning about values, cultures, motivational, and economic aspects of learning as well as how technology continues to play a big role in education today. During this course you will understand why the phrase can be partially misunderstood and problematic as well.

 

ED 800: Concepts Educational Inquiry

Dr. Steven Weiland

This class focuses on the many forms on educational philosophies and is a foundational course in the Master of Arts in Education (MAED). This class discusses the role of the learner, teacher, technology, the process of inquiry, and the role of technology. There are many opportunities to discuss how your thoughts or ideas have changed throughout the course. There are many different perspectives and ideas in this course which let you discover more about yourself and your ideas and beliefs as well.

 

KIN 857: Promoting Positive Youth  Sport Development

Dr. Daniel Gould & Jen Nalepa

Kin 857 focuses on the development and different approaches you can use as a youth coach to

help enhance your athletes skills. This course really also identifies some of the main reasons kids want to participate in sports in general such as being with friends, having fun, staying active. Kids want to play sports for many reasons outside of winning which is something youth coaches must understand. in addition this class questions whether parents persistence on sports specification is beneficial or not.

KIN 854: Legal Issues of Coaching

Dr. Jennifer Nalepa

This class is designed to help coaches and directors of recreational programs understand their responsibilities in maintaining the correct legal approaches for amateur athletes. This class helps you with knowing concepts, and procedures that will benefit the safety and health of these athletes. In this course you will gain understanding of the required obligations and risks of partaking in these certain physical activities.

 

KIN 865: Stages of Athlete Development

Dr. Jennifer Nalepa

This course explains the different stages athletes go through during their life. From early childhood into early adulthood, you will enhance the best coaching practices and manage athletes through their progressions. Some athletes mature quicker than others and coaches can recognize the implications and help manage to best their ability. Motor skills are developed at a different rate for everyone and this class helps identify the right time to teach different skills to your players.

 

KIN 868: Skill Development in Athletes

Dr. Andrew Driska

This class guides its students to develop quality practice planning techniques to ensure the best progressions possible for their athletes. While focusing on developing strong practices for the team, we also learned how to promote individual practice plans for the athlete to work on by themselves. Not only will skill specific drills expand the individual players game, but it will result in the team becoming better as a whole. During this class you will get hands on experience with athletes and conduct coaching sessions to gain valuable experience in the coaching field.

KIN 829: Safety and Injury Control

Dr. Andrew Driska

Students in this course receive instruction on injury prevention, and proper treatment strategies in the event of an injury. As current, or aspiring coaches it is imperative to recognize the potential hazards in your facility or on your playing fields to limit risk. If your team is without a trainer it is necessary to be prepared and educated on the correct protocols. This course is a great tool for enhancing your knowledge in injury control and prevention.

EAD 878: Education in the Digital Age

Dr. Steven Weiland

In this course, we review how technology has changed the modern day classroom for all age groups. In middle school and high school, students now have individualized tablets that they use for educational purposes. This allows for students to do research on their own and explore different problem solving methods. In college, there are now more online classes today than ever. Additionally you will recognize pros and cons of the modern day classroom and form your own opinions on the technological advancements being made.

 

KIN 855: Psychological Bases of Coaching

Dr. Andrew Driska

This class informed the students on the psychology of athletes. It dives into the mental aspect of sport and how it can impact athletes in different ways. In this class we identified separate coaching styles and its impact on an athlete. We later look into a few famous athletes that have dealt with mental health problems and how serious this sort of thing can be. In this class we are able to come up with ways to find out what success truly means to these athletes and how to help them reach their goals.

ED 870: Capstone Seminar

Dr. Matthew Koehler & Aric Gaunt

This course reflects on students time in the Masters of Arts in Education program at MSU. While creating a web portfolio students are asked to showcase their work. This course focused on students past experiences in class and their future goals. This class is a celebration of all of the time, and hard work that has been dedicated to graduating with a masters degree.
